Bats at the Beach (A Bat Book)

Yet another Christmas present, we got this in board book format. It’s a slightly surreal story of bats going for a midnight picture at the beach, told in rhyme. What makes this worthwhile though is the artwork, which is absolutely glorious. From bug-mallows, speared and toasting above the fire with their little legs waving, to the bat buried on the beach with feathered wings build above him, there’s so much to look at and enjoy. The story works well for discussing what bats might do differently, and I particularly enjoy the little armbands on the tiny bats so as to keep them safe in the water, and them clinging sleepily to their parent’s fur as they fly home at the end of the night.

Definitely one to treasure and read over and over again, I’m quite happy this one is a sturdy one as it will survive the experience.
