Sly Fox and Red Hen
is from the Ladybird read it yourself series. Nice big writing, repetitive phrases and not too challenging stories. Lots going on in the pictures (Smallest is particularly fond of spotting different animals, such as the mice in Sly Fox’s house) although if your child is pedantic, they might wonder how come the fox doesn’t spot that the bag is suddenly a lot heavier and more full after his nap.
These are short and ideal for reading aloud with children who are thinking about reading – I’m fairly sure Smallest has cracked quite a bit of a the code already, but she doesn’t want to let on. As there is no messing around with the writing I can be sure she’s getting the chance to read along with me if she feels so inclined.
It’s got: a good guy and a bad guy, guess who is who.
It’s not: the sort of thing you’re going to fall in love with.
